Statesboro, Ga. - Harvey Elbert Deal, 65, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice after a long illness.

The Bulloch County native was a Vietnam veteran, serving as a sergeant E-5 track mechanic in the United States Army at Ft. Hood in Killeen, TX.

After his discharge, he returned to Chamblee, Ga. where he owned an appliance repair business. Later he returned to Bulloch County where he farmed for several years before opening Deal's Appliance Service until his retirement.

Elbert was a wonderful and loving father and husband who worked hard to care for his family. He was known for his integrity, his pride in his work, and his honesty and strong character.

He loved nature and instilled in his children a strong work ethic, a love of God's work and an appreciation for the earth.

Elbert was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Yarbrough Deal and his parents, William Harvey Deal and Grace Lee Deal; brothers, Donald Wayne Deal and William Marion "Buddy" Deal and his sister, Margie Nell Deal Zimmerman.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Nubern Deal and their son, Jeffrey Brandon Deal of Statesboro; son, Bryan Wesley Deal and daughter, Holli Deal (Stan) Bragg, all of Portal; as well as their mother, Brenda Deal NeSmith.

Also surviving are sisters, Ethel Dolrease "Reesie" Deal Smith of Statesboro and Jean Rushing Frawley of Brooklet; and brothers Travis (Alice) Deal of Metter, Richard (Faye) Deal of Mountain Rest, S.C., Rusty (Linda) Deal of Statesboro and Billy (Esther) Rushing of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Steve Taylor officiating. Interment will be in the Trinity Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459 or the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, New York 10016.

Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro is in charge of arrangements.
