WALDORF, Md. - Clark D. Mittan, 71, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, in Waldorf.
He was born Jan. 19, 1939, in Scottsbluff, Neb.
Mr. Mittan joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957, and served for 26 years, retiring in 1983. He did research work for NASA, and isolation tests for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab projects. In 1966, he transferred to Kadena AFB on Okinawa. Following his tour on Okinawa, he was assigned to Wright-Patterson. While stationed there, he did several tours of duty - one to Rangoon, Burma, where he learned he was the first American to lecture there since World War II.
In 1977, he went to his last duty station - Andrews AFB. He was the non-commissioned officer in charge of the altitude chamber and was also the superintendent of instructors. He also worked with John Denver on the special "The Higher We Fly," a special that concentrated on space and air flight.
In his retired years, he was a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Charlotte (Skovira) Mittan, of Waldorf and formerly of Poultney, Vt.; four children, Carol Bronson, Chris Krucelyak, Cheryl Smith and Clark Mittan; six grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Schulz and Anita Closson; and a brother, Ellis Mittan.
The funeral service for Master Sergeant, USAF, Clark Mittan (Retired) will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, in the chapel of Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, Maryland.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Md.
