James Adams, died 20 May 1852, aged 68 yr. (so born in about 1784).

James Adams was bonded in Virginia, to marry Sally McCroskey, the daughter of Joseph McCroskey, on 15 Jan 1810, with the marriage to follow shortly. Per the Rockbridge Co. Clerk of Circuit Court, Marriage Bonds, Film # 007738872 on Familysearch 216/870 (see photo).

On the 1850 Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer JAMES Adams 62; other Adams: Sarah, 58; Nancy, 20 plus William Peters, 13. James was born in Pennsylvania and the rest in Virginia.

See further data on him and his family in Henry Whittemore's The History of the Adams Family, With Biographical Sketches of Distinguished Descendants of the Several American Ancestors....., 1893 publication in NY, p 71-73. It says he was the son of John Adams and Jane Hutchinson. Both sons, Capt. James and Capt. Hugh served in the War of 1812. James born in 1788, married Sarah McCroskey. His parents and some siblings and family are also buried at this cemetery.

The Sep 2019 grave photo caption says "Mostly illegible, but I can make out James.
