Silas Barrett, Sr
Silas Barrett, Sr, the oldest resident in the village, died
Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock, being sick about 4 weeks. Mr. Barrett was born in Hinsdale, N.H., March 5th, 1789. He served actively in the War of 1812 for which he received a pension. Soon after the war he married Lucinda Evans, and moved to Le Ray, Jefferson County, in this state where he resided forty years. During his residence there, his wife died, and he was married again in 1826 to a sister [Sedate Evans] of his first wife. His family comprised nine children, five girls and four boys. Four are now Living: Mrs. Lucinda Carnegie of Mallorytown, Ont., and Mrs. Wm. Swain, Miss Pauline Barrett, and Mr. Silas Barrett Jr., residing in Youngstown. Mr. Barrett has been a resident of this village 38 years, and during the time has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church. He first united with the church in Jefferson County. Up to the time of his last illness, he was quite well and smart for a man of his years and to the day before his death his mind and memory was exact as to the events that transpired in his early life, especially as to the war of 1812. He was a strong and hardy man, and a pioneer in Jefferson County. In politics he was a Whig until the advent of the Republican party with which he affiliated. He voted for seventeen presidents, his last ballet being cast for Garfield. During his illness, he received every attending that willing hearts and loving hands could do. He was a worthy citizen, a good neighbor, and a man of principle throughout. In their bereavement, the family have the sympathies of this community. The funeral was held yesterday at 10 o'clock A. M., from his late residence, Rev. John Reid officiating, and the remains laterred to the Youngstown Cemetery (probably Universal Presbyterian).

Silas Barrett was the son of Elijah Barrett and Mary Shattuck. Elijah Barrett was an American Revolution Patriot from New Hampshire. Mary Shattuck, the daughter of Daniel Shattuck who was a Capt in the American Revolution.
