Alex A. Ellis, 53, was born on March 12. 1922, ot Geza and Mary (Illesh) Czegledy, of South Bend, Ind.. After graduating from high school, Alwx worked a few jobs in the South Bend area, but though he was ready for better things in life. At the age of tywenty one, he enlisted in the Navy. After completing his 18 weeks of basic training, Alex volunteered for submarine school. He was soon assigned to the USS Lagarto (SS-371)
In mid apral of 1945, ALex was diagnosed with a hearing problem caused by air pressure at low depths and was placed in the hospital for testing.
During the time Alex was hospitalize, the Lagarto received orders to put to sea. Alex was told he could meet the boat at a later date. The Lagarto was never heard from again, lost with all hands, 85 men.
For the rest of his life Alex battled with the thought he should have died with his shipmates. In the year to come Alex tryed to take his own life time and time again. Even with help from doctors, his thoughts stayed the same, he should haved died with his shipmates.
In May of 1975, Alex found his way to his shipmates. He commited suicide by hanging.
Alex was laid to rest on March 22, 1975 in Sacred Heart Cem., South Bend, Indiana.
