William John Benda was born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Jackson, the son of Victor and Clara (Imro) Benda. He spent his educational years in the Jackson school system, graduating in 1945. Bill served in the Army from July 1945 to February 1946, when he transferred to the Air Force. He attended college as part of the Army and was trained in radio mechanics in the Air Force being honorably discharged in February 1949. After his discharge, he attended Champlain College, Plattsburg, N.Y. He returned to Jackson in the fall of 1950 and was employed at the Ford Garage. In 1952 he married Dorothy K. Volk. He began his career with Northwestern Bell in 1955, which necessitated his moves to Windom, Austin and Owatonna. In 1968 he moved to raise his family in Jackson. Bill began teaching a telecommunications course at the technical college and chose to return to the phone company in 1972, where he continued to work until retiring in 1985. Bill worked at Johnson Automotive until 1992. He felt he never had a job; they all were like a hobby to him. On June 9, 1997, he was united in marriage to Wanda Chamberlain in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Bills children were his pride and joy. He was a brilliant man who was very humble. He was an optimist and showed patience with all who met him. His sense of humor was expressed best by his one-liners. Bill enjoyed the out of doors, fishing and hunting and in his later years, his garden. His proudest moments came when he could build or fix something without having to purchase anything. Bills life always included music and he could play a variety of instruments. He played with a number of local polka bands and community bands. Being a member of The Jokers provided many fond memories. He loved a good pool game, and in his later years, enjoyed mastering the cooking and eating of beans.

Bill is survived by his wife, Wanda Benda of Jackson; two daughters, Diane Benda of Jackson and Paula (Denny) Earhart of Jackson; three sons, John (Pam) Benda of Jackson, Jeff (Karen) Benda of Whitefish, Mont., and Marc (Susette Yeager) of Minneapolis; two Stepdaughters, Kammy (Tom) Kramer of Eagan and Kristine (Chuck) Karvelas of Gloucester, Mass. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nephew, Franz Langer of Molokai, Hawaii; and his former wife, Dorothy K. Benda of Jackson.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth Anne Langer; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Langer; and many friends.

Blessed be the memory of William John Benda.
