BLOOD POISONING FATAL TO STUDENT

Richard Beitzel Victim of Accident in Initiation

Richard Wendell Beitzell (sic), 18 Dickinson College freshman, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Carlisle Hospital from blood poisoning resulting from an injury suffered accidentally in February in a fraternity initiation.

As a feature of a Phi Delta Theta induction Beitzel was sent out into the country. While walking in the vicinity of Plainfield he scraped his leg on a jagged tree stump which inflicted an injury. Returning to town he had the injury treated, but later infection set in. He was admitted to the Carlisle Hospital two weeks ago in a serious condition and gradually grew weaker.

Beitzel played center on the Carlisle High School football team and also on the Dickinson freshman eleven last fall. He was graduated from Carlisle High last June. He was a member of the First Church of God and the Sunday School.

He is survived by his father, John Beitzel, of Harrisburg; a half brother, Donald C Beitzel, Harrisburg; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Barley, of Carlisle, with whom he resided; and these uncles, Clarence Barley, Chicago: James Barley, Ohio; and Charles, Albert, Ray Barley and Mrs. W. G. Rice, an aunt, all of Carlisle.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon from the home of the grandparents, 162 D Street. Burial will be in the Old Graveyard. Friends may call Sunday evening at the home.
