Cor (Catharinus) Van Alphen, age 87, died peacefully at his home on December 11, 2010.
He was born February 26, 1923 in Haarlem, the Netherlands to Teunis and Teuntje Donker Van Alphen.
On March 29, 1950, he married his sweetheart, Martha Lakerveld, in Haarlem, the Netherlands. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1952. They are the parents of six children.
As a young man, Cor played semi-professional soccer, a sport he loved his entire life. He spent several years in a German concentration camp during World War II. Following the war, he joined the LDS Church, and he and his wife immigrated to Utah.
He spent his working career as an accountant for the Jordan Meat Company. He was a valued employee, and the owners of the company treated him as if he was one of their own. Cor had a deep love for the Lord, and that love carried over to everyone he knew.
He greeted everyone with a beaming smile and a strong handshake. He served faithfully in many church callings including serving as a bishop twice and as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple.
He served two missions to the Netherlands: first as a young man, leaving a pregnant wife and infant daughter, and second, with his lifelong companion Martha. His love of people influenced their lives for good. He will be missed by family and friends.
Cor is survived by his wife Martha and children Tineke (Brent) Larsen, JoAnn (VerDon) Parrish, Michael (Kayleen) Van Alphen, Christa (Jon) Ashton, Rebecca (Rod) Fenn, and Corrine (Paul) Cloward, thirty grandchildren, and thirty-six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Willem Van Alphen and sister Ria Peters both in the Netherlands. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Hendrika Van Maarsbergen and Alida Kruijer, grandson Eric Larsen, and great-grandson Dallas Orton.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Midvale Fourth Ward Chapel, 7825 South Olympus Street (220 West). Friends may call on Monday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), and Monday at the Church from 10:00-10:45 a.m.
Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens.
