Thomas was born in Saint Paul and lived there all of his life, until he was drafted into the US Army11 April 1966.
Arriving in Vietnam 28 September 1966, Thomas was assigned to A Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division, USARV. The battalion was participating in Operation Thayer II. On Thanksgiving Day A Company was operating in the vicinity of the Cay Giep Mountain and 9 kilometers south southeast of Bong Son City , when A Company encountered hostile forces. Thomas died as a result of gunshot wounds to the back from hostile rifle fire.
Survived by his father, Marvin Erickson of 764 James Avenue, Saint Paul, and his mother; Virginia M Erickson of 953 Bradley Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota.
