Allen Rites Scheduled Tomorrow
Funeral services for a Shreveport civic leader and builder, L. Calhoun Allen Sr., 66, of 5231 S. Lakeshore Dr., will be held at the First Presbyterian Church. He died Saturday at Schumpert Sanitarium following a brief illness.
The prominent contractor was the father of L. Calhoun Allen Jr., Shreveport commissioner of public utilities.
Mr. Allen's career spanned three generations in the lumber business. He formed and headed the Allen Construction Co. after attendance at Shreveport schools and the United States Naval Academy.
A member of the Rotary Club and of the Lowe-McFarlane Post of the American Legion since its organization 40 years ago, Mr. Allen also was active in Joppa Lodge, Shreveport Blue. The Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection bears his father's name, L. C. Allen, who was also a prominent lumber, community worker and a former member of the Shreveport City Council. His mother Mrs. Francis O. Allen, was a 30-year member of the Democratic Executive Committee until her death a few years ago.
He was an honorary 33rd degree Mason and held offices in all branches. He was a past potentate of El Karubah Temple Shrine and had been active in all Scottish Rite divisions.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Allen was one of the ruling elders. He was a past president of the Goodwill Industries and the Associated General Contractors.
Survivors in addition to the commissioner of public utilities, are his widow, the former Lel Goodwin, a son, James Edwin Allen, and two grandchildren, Frances Olivia Allen and L. Calhoun Allen III, all of Shreveport.
Dr. J. Frank Alexander, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and the Rev. McNair Smith, pastor of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, will officiate at Monday's services.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with W. A. Peacock Sr., Hines F. Vaughan, Dr. Walter Leabo, M. Douglas Stephenson, Marion K. Smith, B. F. Reeves Jr., H. Kneeland Phelps and John A. Walden serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. J. M. Gorton, Dr. L. L. Davidge, Dr. W. M. Hall, ruling elders and deacons of the First Presbyterian Church, past potentates of El Karubah Temple Shrine and 33rd degree Scottish Rite masons.
