"Mr. Robert Lee Parker, 88, of 710 Parkview Street, died on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Perry Green and Ethel Morrison Parker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maggie Mauney Parker, a brother, Jack Parker, two sister-in-laws, Lillian Mauney Parker, Rachel Wright Parker, a brother-in-law Martin Nanney and two nephews, John Parker and Bruce Clark.
He was a devoted, loving, committed husband to Maggie Mauney Parker for over 65 and a half years, and an equally devoted, loving father to his beloved daughter, Annette. He was a doting great-great-uncle to his nieces and nephews, a loyal friend, and a kind neighbor. He was loved for his clever sense of humor and admired for his positive attitude and love of life. A lover of gospel and bluegrass music, he played the mandolin.
He served in the United States Army from 24 October 1942 until 15 December 1944 when he was honorably discharged at Fort Bragg, NC. He participated in numerous Battles and Campaigns including Rome-Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. He received the following decorations and citations including the EAMET Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a Private First Class in the SO 123 HQ Company H 363rd 91st Infantry Division. On 14 August 1944, he received the American Theater Campaign Medal. He was wounded twice but received no Purple Hearts because he chose not to report the injuries to spare his wife further worry for his safety.
He was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Chairman of the Building and Finance Committee, was leader of the Royal Ambassadors, served as an usher, was a helper with Vacation Bible School, and was also a member of the men's Sunday school class.
He retired following 30 years of service with JP Stevens Company in Shelby; retired from Stonecutter Mills in Rutherfordton, and retired after 19 years of service with Wal-Mart.
Mr. Parker is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Annette Parker of Shelby, five brothers, James "Buck" Parker of Shelby, A.C. "Tom" Parker and wife Joyce of Shelby, P. G. "Speed" Parker and wife Lib of Shelby, Glenn "Vop" Parker and wife Jo of Lattimore, Billy Dean "Jake" Parker of Shelby, five sisters, Margaret "Sis" Parker Williams of Greensboro, NC, Jewel "Susie" Parker Clark of Shelby, Joanne Parker Nanney of Shelby, Mary Parker Denton of Lattimore, Betty Parker Greene and husband Herb of Granite Falls, NC, 17 nieces and nephews, a very special nephew, Cliff Harrison of Rockwall, TX, a very special niece Laura Harrison Robinson of Flat Rock, NC, a special great-great nephew Quinton Robinson of Asheville, NC, a special great-great niece Abbigail Grace Elizabeth Robinson of Flat Rock, NC, as well as hundreds of grieving friends.
