COMMISSIONER OF FIRE POLICE DIES AT AGE 67
George W. Althouse, a Berks County fire police commissioner and a Boy Scout leader, died Saturday night at 6:25 in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday.

Althouse, 67, of 369 Adams Hotel Road, Shoemakersville, formerly of Shartlesville, was a fire police commissioner since 1984.

A former assistant fire chief of Shartlesville's Community Fire Company, he was a trustee of the company. Althouse had been an organizer and instructor of the training program for Berks fire police.

From 1963 to 1966, he had been assistant scoutmaster of Troop 149, Boy Scouts of America, Shartlesville. He had been scoutmaster of the troop from 1966 to 1986.

A former scoutmaster of Centerport Troop 1, he was assistant scoutmaster of Troop 103, Fleetwood, and unit commander for the Fleetwood-area Boy Scouts.

In 1982, Althouse received the Silver Beaver Award for leadership from the Boy Scouts of America.

Born in Lebanon, he was a son of the late George W. Althouse Sr. and Ida (Clawser) Althouse.

An Army veteran of World War II, he had been employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a plumber and electrician in Reading and Middletown before retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Frieden's Union Church, Shartlesville.

Surviving are a son, Bryan W., with whom he resided, and three grandsons.
Two brothers: William, Temple, and Howard, Reading.
Also three sisters: Dorothy, wife of Wayne Freese, Reading; Luella, widow of Mervin Stoudt, Ocala, Fla.; and Patricia, wife of Wilmer Spatz, Mount Penn.
The Milkins Funeral Home Inc., Temple, is in charge of arrangements.
