Robert, the son of Benoni Axtell and Amanda Bonham, enlisted from Iowa City as a Private in Company "D", 24th Iowa Infantry on 14 March 1864. He was mustered out in Savannah on 17 July 1865.

He farmed after the War, and married Mary Ella Godlove Marling (widow of Aaron A. Marling) in Washington County, Iowa on 29 July 1879. They eventually moved to Colorado.
