Martin Kodner lived his life as a passionate art collector and owner of Kodner Gallery, which is one of the leading galleries in the country. To many, he was known as an authority figure, appraiser, dealer and collector on rare European and American art of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Mr. Kodner died Saturday (May 4, 2002) at his home in Creve Coeur after a long illness. He was 67.

A native of St Louis, Mr. Kodner graduated in the early 1960s from St Louis College of Pharmacy. He then started collecting art and traveling around the country trying to find pieces of art he called his "hidden gems."

Mr. Kodner was one of the fortunate few to turn a passion for art to one of the most respected art galleries in the country," said Al Goldman, corporate vice president of A.G. Edwards. "He loved his family and friends very deeply, and this emotion was shared by everyone whom he knew."

In 1957, Mr. Kodner married his high school sweetheart, Penny Worth.

In the 1960s, Mr. Kodner and his brother Mike founded Kodner Development and Realty in Creve Coeur. The company became one of the largest home developers in St. Louis until it was dissolved in the early 1970s.

In 1972, Mr. Kodner established Kodner Gallery in Ladue, which his son said has become one of the largest galleries in the Midwest He owned and operated it for more than 20 years, then expanded in the early 1990s with a second gallery in Clayton.

At the time of his death, he was compiling an illustrated listing of the complete works of two artists native to St Louis, Oscar E. Berninghaus and Carl Wimar. Two of Mr. Kodner's sons, Jonathan and David, both of Creve Coeur, operate the galleries today.

"My father was the most loving father, husband, brother and uncle. He was the glue that held the family together," said a third son, Mark Kodner of Creve Coeur. "He has built some of the most major private and public collections in the United States."

Mr. Kodner was a philanthropist who supported the St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri Historical Society, Jewish Community Center, Temple Israel and Bames-Jewish Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday with the funeral immediately following at Temple Israel on Ladue and Spoede roads in Creve Coeur. Interment will be private.

In addition to his three sons, Mr. Kodner is survived by his wife of 44 years, Penny Kodner of Creve Coeur; two brothers, Mike Kodner of Chesterfield and Ira Joe Kodner of Frontenac; and six grandchildren.
