SSgt. Boyd died from the results of a motorcycle crash. He had been in Station Hospital in Goldsboro, New Hope Township, Wayne, North Carolina for a day before he passed away, on September 26, 1943.

He is survived by his father, Robert James Boyd, Sr and step mother, Maybelle Agnes (Christensen) Boyd; mother, Verna Viola (Fay) Boyd McWhinnie and stepfather, James Andrew McWhinnie; one sister, Mary L. Phillips, of Peoria; two brothers, Robert James Boyd, Jr. of Jefferson, Iowa; and William Edward Boyd of Dixon, Illinois.
