Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th Maine Volunteer Infantry on December 17, 1862. Promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment, he led his men as it participated in operations in Louisiana and Texas in 1863, and in Virginia in 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services", and was honorably mustered out on September 13, 1865.
