Carmelita E. Coates, 79, of Milwaukie, passed away Nov. 18, 2010.
She was born in Kincaid, Kan., in 1931 to Mark and Edith Gillham. The family moved to Oregon where Carmelita graduated from Sandy Union High School in 1948 and married John Karlen Jr. They later divorced and she subsequently married Joseph G. Coates in 1958.
Carmelita owned an upholstery business for 18 years, and then worked as a cook at a care center. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and an active, dedicated member of the Milwaukie Grange, serving the community in multiple capacities for 40 years. She and Joe also enjoyed their Good Sam and Clackamas Camper membership and traveled extensively throughout the West.
Carmelita is survived by her sisters, Kathleen Couch and Delores Tanner; and her children, Juanita Lane, John Karlen III, Debra Burke, Mike Coates, and Steven Coates; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, Portland, followed by an informal potluck gathering at Milwaukie Grange until 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Carmelita asked that donations be made to Milwaukie Grange.
