Nuclear physicist and cosmologist. His 1928 quantum theory was an early and important basis for future work. He was instrumental in formulating the 'big bang' thoery of the creation of the universe. He later became interested in biochemistry and postulated the concept of a genetic code. He wrote scientific books for the 'lay reader' including "One, Two, Three...Infinity" in 1947.
