Samuel Madison Dunlap was the son of Milton Pollock Dunlap and Sarah Isabella Kerr Dunlap. He married Susan Mildred McCorkle,


Samuel lived in the home his grandfather, Madison Dunlap, built in 1847, on the west Midland Trail. He was a busy man in Lexington, Virginia, as president of the Myers Hardware Company; Vice President of the Rockbridge National Bank; board member of the Lexington School and Deacon in the Lexington Presbyerian Church on Main Street, in Lexington. He was interviewed by Jas W McClung for the 1936 Works Progress Administration, concerning the old home of his grandfather.


On 23 Oct 1877, Saml M Dunlap, Jr. was born in Kerrs Creek, Rockbridge Co., Virginia, to parents farmer M P and Sallie Dunlap. His father was the informant. He is on the 1880 and 1900 Kerrs Creek, Rockbridge Co. ,Virginia census with his parents. Per 1877 Rockbridge Co., Virginia Birth Register, Vol.1, 1853-1877, p 668 (typed transcript of original book), Film # 007579051 on Familysearch, 344/650.


On the 1910 Lexington, Virginia census, I found hardware retail merchant Samuel M Dunlap, 31; wife Susan M, 29; daughter Mildred M, 1 9/12; son Samuel M, Jr., 6/12 and brother in law, Samuel W McCorkle, 21, all Virginia born. They lived at 6 Edmondson Ave.

On the 1920 Lexington, Virginia census, I found hardware merchant Samuel M Dunlap, 41; wife Susan M, 39; daughter/sons: Mildred McC, 11; Samuel M, Jr., 9 and James McK, 4 3/12, all Virginia born. They lived at 97 S. Main Street.


On the 1930 Lexington, Virginia census, I found hardware store salesman Samuel M Dunlap, 52; wife Susan M, 44; daughter/sons: Mildred M, 20; Samuel M, 18 and James Mc, 14, all Virginia born.


On the 1940 Lexington, Virginia census, I found hardware store part owner, Sam M Dunlap, 62 and wife Susin M, 58, both Virginia born.


1942 WW II Draft Registration Card for Samuel Madison Dunlap, born 23 Oct 1877, resided at 509 S Main Street, Lexington, Rockbridge, Virginia, aged 64, Rockbridge Co. born, employed by Myers Hardware Co., Inc, Lexington.


Samuel Madison Dunlap was born 23 Oct 1877 in Virginia, to parents Milton P Dunlap and Sarah Kerr. He was the widow of Susan McCorkle Dunlap and a retail hardware merchant. On 31 Oct 1955, he died in Lexingon, Virginia. The informant was S M Dunlap, Jr., of Lexington. Virginia CD #24056.


"Recent Deaths. S. M. Dunlap, Sr. Samuel Madison Dunlap, Sr., died Monday at his home on South Main Street. He was born in Rockbridge County, October 23, 1877, the son of the late Milton P. Dunlap and Sarah Kerr Dunlap, both of the county. He married Miss Susan McCorkle, of the county, who preceded him to the grave in 1947. Mr. Dunlap was an elder in the Lexington Presbyterian Church, president of Myers Hardware Company, Mason and Shriner. He was also a former president and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rockbridge National Bank, chairman Lexington School Board. Mr. Dunlap is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. P. Coe, Lexington; two sons: Samuel M. Dunlap, Jr., Lexington; and James McKee Dunlap, Charlottesville. Also four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Moore Harper, Kerrs Creek; Mrs. R. T. Anderson, Route 8, Lexington; Mrs. F. M. Leech and Miss Margaret Dunlap, Lexington; 6. T. Dunlap, Maryland and Clarence M. Dunlap, Kerrs Creek. Funeral services were conducted from the grave in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday by his pastor Dr. J. J. Murray."
