Gene Hoffman Edwards, a son of Walter Aloysius and Mary Julia (Whelan) Edwards, was born in Lewis County WV March 15, 1904 and died there December 22, 1981. He married Sarah Brewster in Latrobe, PA September 24 1932. Sarah, a daughter of James Henry and Ann (Kitson) Brewster, was born in Lewis County WV March 28, 1908 and died in June 1997.
Sarah enrolled in the Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, WV in 1925. Upon graduation, she attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA. She later returned to Greenbrier College as Assistant to the Dean of Women.
Gene attended Notre Dame, he played both football and basketball and was a member of the 1924 National Championship football team that beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl.
In 1926, he was the quarterback and co-captain of the Fighting Irish football team.
Gene often told the story of the game in the 1926 season when Knute Rockne did not accompany the team to Carnegie Tech at Pittsburgh, PA and Notre Dame lost 19-0. It was their only loss of the season.
Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he returned to Weston and accepted a position with the Bank of Weston.
Some years later, he became assistant football and basketball coach at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. While he was coaching at St. Vincent, the professional football league was in its infancy, and Art Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, approached Gene about coaching the Steelers. At that time, he was making more money and had more job security at St. Vincent than Mr. Rooney was able to offer.
In 1956, Gene and Sarah returned to Weston where he accepted a position with the Citizens Bank of Weston and, in 1968, was named the Chairman of the Board of Directors.
He was awarded one last honor in athletics when, in 1970, he was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
