Jewel Gilmore Denman, age 74, was born on November 24, 1924 to the late Sarah and Dale Gilmore. She was the youngest of eight children. She received her education from Ratcliff schools.
She united with Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church at an early age, presently pastured by Rev. Long. She served faithfully as her health would allow, until her demise. She united in Holy Matrimony with Chester Denman. During their fifty-seven years of marriage, eight children were born and many memories unfolded. There were sad times and there were glad times. There were hard times, but because of her strength, we made it through.
Jewel had so many special nieces, nephews and friends. She was a woman who was not afraid to tell you that she loved you. She touched so many lives and so many responded. She loved to cook – her home a revolving door with much hospitality and food and love and food and joy and food. She also loved to quilt until her eyesight dimmed. She knew just how to make each of her children, grandchildren and great—grandchildren feel special and each in their own way. That same skill she used on her nieces, nephews and friends. To know her was to love her. If you didn't know her, you missed a treat.
She departed this life on Saturday, January 9, 1999, the birthday of her second Charles; the only child not living in the state of Texas. We think it might have been her way of saying a special goodbye to him.
She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers; Leslie Denman, Naomi Foreman, Jack and Leroy Gilmore; granddaughter, Kristi Dove and great-granddaughter, Illeecia McGee.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Chester Denman of Ratcliff; Children, Brenette Denman of Dallas, Patsy Green (Charles) of Houston, Fannie Mask of Ratcliff, James Denmon (Bonnie) of Lufkin, Charles Denman (Dottie) of Phoenix, Arizona, Carolyn Henderson (Cal) of Desoto, Donald Denman of Pearland and Debra Davis (Danny) of Missouri City, Texas; Sixteen grandchildren; Dondi and Michael Dove of Dallas, Texas, Derrick Henderson (Sonia), Andrea Mask and Craig Henderson of DeSoto, Texas, Carmen Denman of Lufkin, Marque Denmon (Desiree) of Atlanta, Georgia, Monique Nunn (Arlington) of Nacogdoches, Cecele and Tara Denman of Phoenix, Arizona, Christian and Deanna Denman of Pearland and Jarrett Davis of Missouri City, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Porsche Denman of Lufkin, Chase and Jaiquie Dove of Dallas, Torey Allen Henderson of Dallas and Jonathan Hill of DeSoto; Sisters and brother; Caroline Simmons of Lufkin, Dorothy Wallace and Mittie V.
