A Civil War veteran, blacksmith, & Baptist minister, "Jacob" immigrated to the United States from Bavaria as a stowaway aboard a steamship around 1855.* Settled in Wakefield, Pike County, Ohio. Born to Adam & Anna Maria (Wind) Brand. Brother of John Adam Brand (1833-1912) of Portsmouth, Ohio. Spouse of Nancy Jane (Walker) Brand, married 54 years. Five children. Volunteered for Civil War duty in August 1861, serving in the Union Army, Company B, 25th Infantry Regiment, Indiana Volunteers for the duration of the war. Surname shortened from "BRANDT" to "BRAND." German/Dutch descent.
