Scientist and Olympic Athlete. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania, he obtained a PhD in Chemistry in 1940 and served as head Professor of Biochemistry at E. R. Johnson University for over four decades. While in this position he invented the device to measure enzyme reaction times in scattering biological materials, which is now industry standard. He also launched the research which led to the creation of optical infrared diagnostics used to detect tumors, hemorrhages in tissues and human brain function activity. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1974. An avid sailor his whole life, he won a gold medal in the 5.5 meter men's sailing class, at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He died of natural causes at the age of 97.
