After having a child die shortly after birth, you know why her parents named their newborn daughter Joy. Joy Elizabeth was born to John and Anna (Tornow) Waite in Woodbine, IA. She attended school in Woodbine. She would marry Leroy Black.

Joy E. (Waite) Black, age 89, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away November 16, 2010, at Midlands Living Center. Joy was born March 30, 1921, in rural Woodbine, Iowa, to the late John F. and Anna L. (Tornow) Waite. She graduated from Woodbine High School in 1938. Joy moved to Council Bluffs in 1964 and worked 11 years at Blue Star Foods and 8 years at Campbell Soup retiring in 1986. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church and was presently a member of Broadway Christian Church. Joy was preceded in death by 2 sisters; and 3 brothers. She is survived by daughters, Connie (Lonnie) Ondracek, of Blairstown, Iowa and their children, Robin Wahlert, Craig and Kelly Ondracek: Carol (Jeff) Laux, of Longmont, Colo., and daughter, Bonita Esquibel; Deanna Bailey, of Council Bluffs and her children, Melissa DeBolt, Sean and Kevin Bailey; son, Monte and wife, Linda (Baker) Black, of Martell, Neb., and daughter, Laura Fincher; 11 great grandchildren. Family receiving friends, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jann Osborn officiating. A lunch will immediately follow at Broadway Christian Church. Interment, Saturday, 2:30 p.m., in the Woodbine, Iowa Cemetery. Memorials to Broadway Christian Church or Deaf Missions.
