Alex is the son of Halifax Ashby, Sr., and, per family lore, Sarah Jane Hudson.
Several children (nearly all!) of Halifax and Sarah moved into the Lincoln Co. area in the 1820's or so.
Alex died relatively young.
Current info is the graves in this site have been knocked over. I am attempting to have the stones photographed, but the area is up in the mountains and very difficult to locate without someone who knows the area accompanying you.
This cemetery is also referred to as the "Groce Cemetery."
Rachael Elizabeth Ashby Warden and Mary "Polly" C. Ashby Warden are sisters, children of Alex and Lavinia, and the first and third wives of John Warden (also buried here).

Alexander "Alex" Ashby, also seen as "Sandy," was born 5/09/1800 in Surry? Co., NC. On 2/19/1821, in Surry Co., he married Lavinia "Viney" Groce, born in NC on 7/28/1805. She is also seen as Levina.
The will of Halifax Ashby, Sr. establishes Alex's parentage; Halifax reputedly married Sarah Jane Hudson. Alex's had many siblings, most of whom moved to Lincoln County (LCT).
Lavinia's parents are unknown, but doubtless she connects with the other LCT Groce families of Surry and Yadkin counties, NC. Indeed, three of Alex's siblings and a daughter married Groces! (Apparently, the name stems from the Germanic "Gross." Many, if not all, Yadkin Valley Groce family members stem from Simon Gross, said to have come from Germany, through Lancaster Co., PA and into NC.)

Frances A. (8/03/1828 – 7/12/1895, near Howell (Unity Cemetery, Howell)), who married Samuel R. Brown;
Nathaniel "Nathan" Alexander (3/11/1831 – 12/28/1858, LCT);
Marian Jane (September 1834 – 2/17/1911, home on Gimlet Creek near Booneville) who married Martin "Mark" Vernon Groce;
Nancy Ann "Mandy" (8/17/1837 – 11/15/1926, Prospect (Prospect Church Cemetery, Lincoln)) who married Joseph T. Moore;
and
Mary "Polly" C. (3/30/1839 – 3/10/1906, Marian's home near Mimosa), who also married John W. Warden.
Polly's death date is erroneously reported as 1910 in several sources.

Based on censuses, family knowledge, the "Goodspeed History," and Nathan's obituary, it is believed all the children, save John Lewis, were born in LCT, placing the Alex/Viney exodus from NC between mid-1823 and late 1825.
One of the earliest references to Alex (and his brother Travis) is the 7 February 1827 "Village Messenger." It is known he purchased 114 acres, 17 poles of land "between the waters of Mulberry and Norris Creeks..." and 15 acres, 65 poles on "the headwaters of the little west fork of Mulberry..." in LCT (1829), and received an LCT land grant (3/17/1835). In addition, he and Travis were appointed school commissioners (November 1837).
In January 1840, Alex represented Concord Primitive Baptist Church, visiting Mount Moriah PBC to ask for assistance in the ordination of John Cunningham; he'd become a delegate in August 1839.
Alex died about 12/29/1840 in LCT, leaving a large family and over 235 acres of land behind; typical of his time were bequeaths to his sons – horses, bridles, and shotguns – and to his daughters – feather beds, furniture, cattle, and cotton wheels. This thoughtful father's will stipulated that the bequests be valued to ensure daughters and sons share equally!
The 1860 census indicated Lavinia's occupation was sewing. She died in LCT around 10/08/1873.
She, Alex, Nathan, Rachael, Mary, Marian, John Warden, and his second wife, Martha Ann Elizabeth Duncan, are buried in Mulberry's Ashby-Warden-Groce Cemetery.
