Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on May, 2, 1891 for his actions as a as a captain in the 11th Infantry Regiment, US Army, at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, all between May 5, 1864 and June 18, 1864. The grandson of US Congressman Richard Cutts from Massachusetts, he enlisted with the 1st Rhode Island Infantry following the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861. In May of that year, he became a captain in the newly created 11th Infantry Regiment, and remained with them throughout the duration of the war, brevetted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Following the war, he transferred to the 20th Infantry Regiment and was dismissed from the US Army in June 1868 for conduct unbecoming an officer. While he was cited for gallantry in three different battles, he only received one Medal of Honor that covered all his achievements. He died in Washington DC around the age of 65. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in actions."
