John T. Battle was born in Wilkes County, Georgia. He and his parents, O.L. & Martha (Irvin) Battle came to Texas in 1855. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war he attended the University of Virginia for a year and then returned to Texas and settled at Galveston. In 1869 he moved to Wharton County and engaged in farming. He came to Waco in 1872 and entered commercial enterprises. In 1887 Battle began dealing in real estate. He served as Treasurer of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Baylor University. He was married to Rosa Waddey of Georgia and they had three children.
