In 1927, Irene's father announced her engagement to Prince Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe, but the marriage never took place.
Irene married Prince Aimone of Savoy, Duke of Spoleto, in 1939. In 1941, Aimone accepted the crown of the Independent State of Croatia, taking the name King Tomislav II.
Her husband succeeded his brother as 4th Duke of Aosta in 1942, and the following year they had their only child, Prince Amadeo.
Irene's title as Queen of Croatia was short-lived. Aimone abandoned the crown in October 1943, after Italy withdrew from the war. He had never even been to Croatia during his two years on its throne.
After the Allied armistice' with the Kingdom of Italy in 1944, the princess was captured by the Germans and taken to a labour camp in Austria and later in Poland. She and her son were later liberated by the French.
Irene was widowed in 1948, when her husband died in Argentina. She never remarried, and on her own death she was initially interred with him in Il Borro, Italy.
She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and brothers, King Alexander, King George II and King Paul of the Hellenes, as well as two sisters-in-law, Queen Elisabeth of the Hellenes and HRH Princess Aspasia of Greece and Denmark.
Irene was survived by her son, Prince Amadeo of Savoy, 5th Duke of Aosta and his wife Princess Claude Marie de France; one granddaughter, Princess Bianca of Savoy, and sisters, HRH Princess Helen, Queen Mother of Romania, and HRH Princess Katharine, Mrs. Brandram. (Her grandson, Prince Aimone, Duke of Apulia, was born six months after her death.)
In 1996, the remains of the 4th Duke and Duchess of Aosta were interred in the Basilica.
