In 1942, a white woman in Sikeston, Missouri was brutally assaulted and raped. As the police were trying to locate the person who assaulted her, an African-American man named Cleo Wright was discovered covered with blood. He was taken into custody. While in custody he was tied to the back of a pickup truck, set fire to, and dragged through the streets of Sikeston while still in flames. An investigation ensued, and a trial was held, but the facts of the case were conveniently buried. It is still not clear to this day whether Wright was really responsible for the assault.
