British Royalty. Born Henry William Frederick Albert Saxe-Coburg-Gotha the third son of George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary at York Cottage, Sandringham, Norfolk, England. He was educated at Eton, the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, and at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1917 his name was legally changed to Henry William Frederick Albert Windsor. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter in 1921, a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order in 1922, and as a Privy Counselor in 1925. In 1928, his father created him Duke of Gloucester, Earl of Ulster, and Baron Culloden. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle in 1931, decorated with the Royal Victorian Chain in 1932, and was invested as a Knight, Order of St. Patrick in 1934, and as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1935. He studied at Eton College and later studied at Cambridge University for a year before joining the military. On November 6, 1935, he married Lady Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott. He served with The King's Royal Rifle Corps and the 10th Royal Hussars before retiring from active service in 1937. From 1945 to 1947, the Duke served as the eleventh Governor-General of Australia. In 1949, he served in the office of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was appointed a Field Marshal in 1955 and a Marshal of the Royal Air Force in 1958. With his oldest and unmarried son and heir's death in an air crash in 1972, the Duke's health deteriorated and he died at age 74 at the family seat in Barnwell, Northamptonshire. Upon his death, his second son Richard became Duke of Gloucester. He was the last surviving child of George V and Queen Mary.
