British Royalty. Born His Serene Highness, Francis Joseph Leopold Frederick Prinz von Teck in Kensington Palace, London, the son of Franz Paul Karl Ludvig Alexander Herzog von Teck and Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth Hanover, Princess of Cambridge and a younger brother of Mary who would become Queen Consort Mary of the United Kingdom. He attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst and in 1889 was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. Within a few months he transferred to the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and by 1890 to the 1st Royal Dragoons serving in India, the Middle East, and South Africa. In 1897 – 1898 he served in Nile Expedition. He was decorated with the Companion, Distinguished Service Order. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order. He retired from active service in 1900 at the rank of Major. He died ten years later in London at age 40.
