British Royalty. Born Leopold Arthur Louis von Battenburg, the third child of Henry Maurice, Prinz von Battenberg and Princess Beatrice Mary Victoria Feodore Saxe-Coburg and Gotha of the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria's youngest child. With the advent of the First World War, anti-German sentiment moved the British Royal family to drop German titles and anglicize Germanic names; as a result von Battenburg legally changed his name to Leopold Arthur Louis Mountbatten by Royal License in July 1917. At the same time, he was styled as Lord Mountbatten and was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order. He saw service in the King's Royal Rifle Corps attaining the rank of Major. A hemophiliac, he died during knee surgery at the age of 32.
