Obituary - David Joseph Ellison 1911 ~ 2005 David Joseph Ellison quietly passed away January 18, 2005 at his home following a recent decline in health. He was born July 26, 1911 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. He was the eighth child of James Edward Ellison and Jane Watt Ellison.
In 1915, his family returned to its original home in Layton, Utah. David loved those early years with immediate family, favorite cousins and his grandfather E. P. Ellison. David attended Davis County schools and graduated from Davis High School. He then attended the University of Utah, graduating in the Class of 1932 with a baccalaureate degree. While at the University, he was president of Sigma Chi fraternity, with resulting lifelong associations and friendships. In 1932, he joined a department store marketing and buying firm in New York City. One of his key clients was ZCMI of Salt Lake City.
On February 24, 1933, he married his sweetheart from age 13, Hazel Elaine Blood, daughter of Governor and Mrs. Henry H. Blood. After their marriage in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Following marriage, David and Hazel enjoyed life in New York City and the surrounding area. They then returned to Salt Lake City, where he joined ZCMI as a merchandise manager. Later, taking an opportunity to own a women's retail shop, David and Hazel moved to Salem, Oregon. In 1938, they returned to Salt Lake City where he became a partner and Executive Vice President of Keith O'Brien.
During World War II, he was commissioned in the United States Navy, and after training in Massachusetts served in San Francisco in distribution posts and Manila, Philippines, operating and rebuilding the country's railway system.
Following the war, David resumed his position with Keith O'Brien, which expanded from the initial downtown store. Later, after the Keith O'Brien stores were sold, he managed several department store chains for the buyer. He loved his years in retail and the many relationships he developed. He served as president of the Salt Lake Merchants Association, director of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, and director of the National Retail Merchants Association, New York City.
David and Hazel were active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They valued their membership in and friends of the Parley's First Ward, where David was a High Priest. In later years, they traveled to many family events, including grandchildren's college graduations and marriages, sharing their joy and love with their family. Hazel passed away suddenly on October 21, 1999.
After Hazel's passing, David was blessed to stay in his home and enjoy the company of family, good friends and great neighbors who sustained him and marveled at his general good spirits through health challenges. In recent years, David enjoyed staying close to long-time Salt Lake City friends with whom he and Hazel raised their families.
David, known as Pada by his grandchildren (one of whom so named him), great grandchildren, and even recently by his children, is survived by a loving family. His older sister, Isabel E. Adams, lives in Palm Springs, California. He has four children and their spouses, David H. (Sally) of Portola Valley, California; James E. (Carole) of Washington, D.C.; Janet (William S. Mackenzie) of Salt Lake City; and Thomas A. (Susan) of Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren (seven married with spouses) and 15 great-grandchildren from coast to coast. Each of them will miss his sense of humor, smile, sincere love and concern.
By his passing, he rejoins his beloved eternal partner Hazel (Mimi to their family), parents and six of his seven siblings.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Parleys First Ward, 2350 S. 2100 E., Salt Lake City. A viewing hour will precede the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
