John M. Wolfe passed away peacefully on November 7, 2010 at the age of 79 after a brief illness. He was born in Clay Center, Nebraska on February 14, 1931 to Ford and Opal Wolfe. He grew up in Morrill, Nebraska and later attended college in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and was a dedicated Cornhuskers fan.
Upon graduation, John traveled throughout the Midwest with Robert's Construction building turnpikes and highways. In 1968, he married Kathleen Smith and moved to Memphis, Texas, where he successfully owned and operated movie theaters with his wife and family. In 1978, John moved to Aransas Pass, Texas, where he owned and operated the Bakery Café. In addition to running a restaurant, he was also president of the Aransas Pass Chamber of Commerce and remained involved in civic and political activities. Later, he opened La Cocina Restaurant in Rockport, which he operated until his retirement in 1997.
After retirement, John continued to pursue his interests in antique automobiles, sports, and ballroom dancing. He could usually be found restoring a Packard, ushering for the Hooks at Whataburger Field, or dancing a Foxtrot or Waltz with the love of his life, Kay. He was also a charter member of The Horseless Carriage Foundation and a longtime member of The Society of Automotive Historians. As good as he was in these activities, his greatest joy came from being an excellent father and a remarkable grandfather. He always had time for others and could never say no to his grandchildren, to whom he was their much-adored 'Pap'.
John is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kay); daughters Audrey Hendrix, Susan Wolfe and husband Tim Snider, and Daphne Pinkston; sons Barron Smith and wife Natalie, and Greg Wolfe; grandchildren Jon-Foxx and Ainslea Wolfe, Paige and Nina Smith, Lauren and John C. Wolfe; his sister Ann Withrow and husband Russell; his many nieces and nephews; and a host of beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Don and Wendell.
