Benoist was the first native-born St. Louisan to enter the banking business. His father, Francis M. Benoist, came from Montreal to St. Louis to engage in fur business and Indian trade. When Louis finished school in Kentucky, he studied medicine for two years but then changed to law. Part of his law study was spent in the office of Pierre Provenchere, conveyancer. This resulted in Benoist becoming one of St. Louis' first real estate and loan agents. He opened his banking business in 1832. Successful from the start, he soon opened a branch in New Orleans.
