Marion Putnam Bohner, 92, a resident of J.C. Proctor Endowment Home since 1983, died there at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010.
Marion was met at the Gates of Heaven by her husband, Warren, mother, Josephine, and father, Fred.
She was born July 8, 1918, in Peoria to Fred Humphrey Putnam and Josephine Emerson Putnam; she married Warren L. Bohner on Nov. 2, 1940. He died May 29, 1998.
She is survived by her children, David Emerson Bohner of Chapel Hill, N.C., Margaret Bohner Townsend of Raleigh, N.C., and Bruce Putnam and Gina Bohner of Richmond, Ind.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A native Peorian, Marion graduated from Bradley Polytechnic Institute in 1939.
A member of Lambda Phi, Pi Beta Phi and Pi Gamma Mu, she worked at the Association of Commerce and later as secretary to Murray M. Baker when he served as director of the Illinois Civilian Defense effort during World War II.
Marion was passionate, active and committed to the great City of Peoria. She was a "true leader" in making a difference.
As a "hands-on" leader, Marion raised over $40 million for a variety of community organizations. In 2003, Marion and Warren were recognized as the "Outstanding Philanthropists in 2003" by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Marion served proudly on many boards, including the Bradley University Alumni Association Board and as a representative for the Women's Civic Federation. She was the only two-time president of the Methodist Service League of Methodist Medical Center.
Marion and Warren were passionate supporters of the Peoria Area Community Foundation, where they spearheaded the Warren and Marion Bohner Foundation. Marion also served as an "expert" volunteer for the Peoria Historical Society, where she was known for her in-depth knowledge of Peoria history.
She was a member of Chapter FQ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving as president and many other offices. Her memberships also included As You Like It, Amateur Musical Club, leader and active supporter of the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, Peoria Symphony Guild, Peoria Arts & Sciences Council, and benefactor of Opera Illinois and Central Illinois Youth Symphony, where she dedicated a chair in honor of her son, Bruce Putnam Bohner.
Marion was one of the original donors and enthusiastic supporter of the Lakeview Museum.
One of her hobbies was gardening. A member of the Peoria Garden Club, she was one of the co-founders of the Proctor Resident Gardens Project.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Josephine Emerson Putnam, she was a major benefactor of YWCA, including the Turttle Pool and the current drive to support and honor Betty Friedan.
Marion was a devoted and longtime member of United Presbyterian Church, where she served as both a deacon and an elder. She was recognized for her lifetime commitment and service by the church.
