At age 17, Franklin enlisted Feb. 17, 1865, Griggsville, Pike Co., Illinois in the Civil War, Union, Company G New, Illinois 7th Infantry Regiment, Private. The new recruits were sent directly to the South. Before they arrived, Lee had surrendered, and after a short guarding assignment, the Regiment was assigned to Washington D.C. The 7th Illinois Infantry was to participate in the President Lincoln Memorial to be held July 4. Franklin apparently was one of over 230 Co. G, 7th IL Inf. soldiers that succumbed to disease and was buried in Alexandria, Virginia.
May such a young soul and all those like him rest in peace.
