J. Lindsay Merrill, former member of the West Virginia legislature, vestryman of Trinity Episcopal church and prominent mason, answered the final summons Thursday evening, dying at his home 1228 Juliana street, after an illness of several months. News of his death will be received with regret in Parkersburg and in other places in the state where he was very well known and where his sincerity and probiy of character were recognized.

Mr. Merrill was born in Wirt county, April 21, 1860, where he received his primary education and later became prominent in political circles. He was elected to the legislature and in 1888 took part in the famous Goff-Fleming contest. Coming to Parkersburg about fourteen years ago, he accepted a position with the Shattuck & Jackson Co., and has been associated with the firm since that time. He was an ardent Democrat, a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner, Knight Templar, and a member of the Scottish Rite Temple. A man of genial temperament and kindly nature, his friendship was prized by all who were honored with it and he was the type of citizen whose loss is to be regretted.

Mr. Merrill is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Lorena Douglass, by one son, Douglass; by his Mother, Mrs. M. Merrill; two sisters Mrs. Mary Orkies and Mrs. Lucy Ermlich of Reno, O. and by a brother, Robert Merrill of Akron.

A short funeral service was conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the family residence by Rev. John Gass attended by family and close friends and at 7 o'clock Saturday morning the body will be taken to the home of Miss Fannie Douglass, at Ripley Landing, Jackson County, where the Rev. Mr. Gass will conduct the funeral service, after which burial will be made in the Douglass cemetery.
