Paul P. Biebel Sr., 77, a member of the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame, died of a heart attack Friday.
Mr. Biebel was a basketball referee for 35 years, 15 of them with the Big 10 Conference. He retired from refereeing in 1970.
He worked as a mail carrier out of the U.S. Postal Service's Uptown Station for 40 years.
Survivors include six sons, Paul Jr., a former public defender, Thomas, James, John, Robert and Martin; three daughters, Rosemary Schulter, the wife of Ald. Eugene Schulter (47th), Ellen Guth and Teresa, and 15 grandchildren.
Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Drake & Sons Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes, 4640 N. Ashland. Burial will be St. Boniface Cemetery, 4901 N. Clark.
