The Webster City Freeman, March 20, 1922:

Social at Saratoga.

Mesdames Arthur Adams, N.J. Whaley, Will Ewing and H.T. Layne entertained the members of the sunshine circle and their families at the Layne home Friday night. The guests not having passports into Ireland, the matter was compromised by their walking the rocky road to Dublin and kissing the blarney stone. Ireland proved to be the living room festooned in green, containing the pig in the parlor and other supposedly national characteristics. The hours until 11 o'clock were spent in games and contests suggestive of the seventeenth of March. In the children's contest Frank Stearns won the first prize; in the grown-ups shamrock contest the prizes awarded Will Ewing and Harold Riley, and in the test "Have you the nerves of an Irishman?" the prize was awarded to N.J. Whaley. Mrs. N.J. Whaley gave a short sketch of St. Patrick's life. There were toasts to the Irish and to St. Patrick and Irish stories galore.

Luncheon, carrying out the color scheme of the Irish flag, was served at 11 o'clock.

The clever compliments paid by the departing guests and which left the hostesses in a pleased mood, proved the efficacy of the blarney stone salutation.
