Born on a farm in rural Penn Yann, New York, Jim received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Penn Yann Academy in 1945 and went on to earn a BA at Ohio-Wesleyan University in 1949.

After living in Washington D.C. until 1957, he moved to San Francisco to make his life in the "land of milk and honey." While there he was baptized into the LDS Church on Nov. 17, 1962 and met the love of his life, Karla. They were married in 1967 in the Oakland Temple and went on to raise four children. He worked for Spreckels Sugar Co. as a production manager and private label consultant. He retired in 1993 and moved to Layton, Utah.

He was a councilor in two bishoprics and worked with the Boy Scouts of America as both a scoutmaster and council member. He found great joy in family history work and gardening, and delighted in spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Karla, his sons Mark (Michelle) of Riverton, Utah, Christian (Rebecca) of Layton, Utah and Timothy (Robin) of Spokane, Washington, daughter Kimberly (Jerry) Blyschak of Novato, California, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is also survived by his sister Betty Marschner of Buffalo, New York and his brother Roger (Arlene) Richmond of Penn Yann, New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Mildred Richmond and brother-in-law Ed Marschner.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m .in the Emerald LDS Ward Chapel, 1325 East Cherry Lane in Layton.
