Helen Joyce Alford Queen, 81 of Columbus died Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Morningside Assisted Living.

Mrs. Queen was born in her parent's home in Columbus, GA on September 9, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Lois Shirey Alford and Emmett Hoyt Alford. She attended Columbus public schools and graduated in 1946 from Jordan Vocational High School. She attended Georgia State Women's College. She lived in Virginia, Germany and Hawaii during her late husband's time in the US Army. In 1988, she retired from the US Government/Department of the Army with her last assignment being at the US Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA. She was a member of local ABWA and NARFE chapters, and Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association. She was a longtime member of Sherwood United Methodist Church where she was married and once taught Sunday School. She loved to trout fish on Rock Creek and loved to visit the mountains. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph Edward Queen, sisters, Dorothy Alford Hoyt, Patricia Cheney and brother, James Alford.

Survivors include her daughter Nancy E. Mims and husband Dan of Columbus, GA; son, Tom Queen and his wife Joanna of Butler, GA; one brother Emmett (Buddy) Alford and wife Beth of Idaho Falls, ID; four grandchildren, Robin Mims, Dan Mims, III, Christopher Queen and Helen Queen and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
