William5 Congdon, Esq. (William4, Benjamin3, Benjamin2, John1) was the son of William Congdon (1711-1755) and Ann Gifford (1715-1795). He married Abigail (Sherman) on Apr. 11, 1756 in North Kingstown, RI. They were parents to eight children, six of whom died in their childhood. Those six burial locations are unknown.

Mr. Congdon was one of two delegates called to ratify the Constitution in 1790. William and delegate, Bowen Card, voted agaist ratifying the Federal Constitution, as did many of the rural towns. On May 29, 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original thirteen colonies to adopt the Constitution, after a state wide vote of 34-32.


William Congdon, Esq. died on Mar. 5, 1815. He died at the age of 79 years. William is buried in the Congdon Family Plot in Lot 174-1 at Elm Grove Cemetery in North Kingstown, RI.
