Nicholas Henderson was a Presbyterian minister, school teacher, and rancher. He was born on 9 Nov 1818 in York County, SC to John Robert and Sarah Ann Bishop Henderson.

In 1836, Nicholas received his license in Union Presbytery from Southern and Western Theological Seminary (now called Maryville College) in Maryville, TN. In 1840 he came to Texas and pre-empted 320 acres in Smith County and sold it in 1847.

He married Mahalia Adams on 11 Aug 1847 in Rusk County. She was born 23 Oct 1822 in South Carolina to Lemuel and Elizabeth Brewer Adams. She died 13 April 1859 in Milam County.

They lived at Turkey Creek and later at Brushy Creek in Milam County. Henderson crossing still bears his name. He donated land and built a schoolhouse at San Gabriel and was the first teacher. Their children were; Sam Houston (1848-1938 married Malie Peirson); Finis Ewing (1850-1940 married first Martha Almira (Mattie) Covington and second Sally Reid; Sarah Elizabeth (1852-1947 married Sam George); Mary Ann (Mollie)(1856-1906 married Martin Wilburn Warren); and Robert Lemuel (1859-1944 married Allie Malverda Anderson).

In 1861, he moved his family to Bell County, west of Temple, and in 1863 they moved to Clear Creek, four miles west of Killeen. Nicholas died in October 1869 and is buried on his home place now on West Fort Hood. In 1986 a "Citizen of Republic of Texas" was placed on his grave.
