Charlie "Cleo" Buffkin, 85, of Sanford, N.C., died Sat. Jan. 2, 2010, at Central Carolina Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born in Columbus County, N.C., on March 17, 1924, to the late Coy Buffkin and Lula Morris Buffkin. Mr. Buffkin served in the U.S. Army and was a dedicated member of Morningside Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder for many years. He was the only male member to receive a life-time membership at the church.

Surviving relatives are his wife, Ruth Mills Buffkin; son, Danny Buffkin and spouse Vickie; step-sons, Keith Howard and spouse Cathy, Robin Williams and spouse Jayne all of Sanford; daughter, Cyndi Buffkin Preast and spouse Dr. Jim Preast of South Dakota; step-daughter, Barbara Williams Johnson and spouse Steve of Sanford; faithful companion, YoYo; sisters Maggie Buffkin Turberville of Tabor City and Thelma Buffkin Menkes of Greensboro; grandchildren, Michelle Preast, Erin Buffkin Russell, Jessica Howard, Amber Williams, Trey Williams, Summer Williams, Heather Howard, Dusty Howard, Stewart Tyner and Ashleigh Johnson; great-grandchildren, Sammy Vogel, Taylor Kelly, Bailey Howard, Mackenzie Russell, Eriannie Russell and Halle Russell.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, from 12:30 PM to 2 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Monday, January 4, 2010, qt 2:00 PM at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Betty Sherrod, Pastor Wendell McGee, and Mr. Phil Thomas presiding. Burial will follow with Military Rites at Lee Memory Gardens.
