Hugh graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He joined the surgeons at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where his older cousin, Dr. Arthur Tracy Cabot, served as his mentor as they along with a Dr. Bigelow pioneered the field of genitourinary surgery.

Hugh founded the Genitourinary Clinic at MGH in 1910 where he served as Cheif of the department. He also was an Assistant Professor of genitourinary surgery at Harvard Medical School. In 1918 he edited a book, MODERN UROLOGY.

In 1920, Hugh was lured away from Boston to the University of Michigan to become the Director of Surgery and Dean of the Medical School.
