James Buntin, son of William and Penelope [Carter] Buntin, was born on the 9th day of April 1805 in the area around Halifax Crossings in Nash County, North Carolina.

On May 15th 1831, James married Elizabeth Deans, daughter of George and Charlotte [Smith] Deans, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Together James and Elizabeth had six children: John A., Eliza, Charles Edgar, Martha, George Deans and James Middleton.

In the late 1830's, James and Elizabeth emigrated west through Alabama to the area around Starkville, Mississippi. It was here that James and Elizabeth raised their children; becoming members of the newly formed Starkville A.R.P. Church.

James Buntin departed this life on October 30th 1862 at the age of 57 years, 6 months and 21 days. His wife Elizabeth continued to live in Starkville until her death in 1884. They are buried beside each other in the Old Associate Reformed Presbyterian churchyard cemetery.
