Andrew Harner Yancey, 90, of Harrisonburg, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Yancey was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Harrisonburg, Va. He was a son of the late William Layton and Pearl Hilton Harner Yancey.

He grew up near Keezletown and graduated from Keezletown High School in 1936. Andrew was very active in 4-H Club becoming a 4-H All-Star Member. After graduating from high school, Andrew served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, surviving a kamikaze attack in the battle Okinawa. Following his military service, he attended Purdue University.

Mr. Yancey worked as a salesman for Central Soya Co. in Fort Wayne, Ind., and then in poultry genetics for Frank Harman Hatchery in Harrisonburg, Va. Later, he developed and operated Melrose Farms with his wife and sons. Prior to World War II, he taught youth Sunday school and sang in the choir at Asbury United Methodist Church. Andrew was active in Fellowship Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and taught Sunday school. He later attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church and was a member of the Men's Breakfast Group. Mr. Yancey was a member of the Fort Harrison Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, serving as its president for two terms.

On July 25, 1952, he married Elizabeth Josephine Harrison, who preceded him in death June 29, 2010.

Mr. Yancey is survived by three sons, Thomas H. Yancey and wife, Mary Ann, of Falls Church, Va., Richard H. Yancey and wife, Deborah, of Harrisonburg, and James M. Yancey and wife, Jean, of Harrisonburg; a brother, Walter Yancey of Luray, Va.; six grandsons, Andrew Yancey, Christopher Yancey, Thomas Yancey, Harrison Yancey, Jacob Yancey and Benjamin Yancey. He was preceded in death by a brother, Layton Yancey.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Father Daniel Robayo officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Lacey Spring Cemetery.

The Yancey family will receive friends Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lacey Spring Cemetery Fund, c/o Wesley Graves, 2621 Smithland Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
