James David Hamilton was born in Greensberg, Ky., and was killed by coming in contact with a high powered electric wire belonging to Texas Power & Light Co. which had been blown down by the terrible storm of that night. Had he lived until the 19th of September he would have reached his 50th year.
At the age of seven he moved to Texas with his parents and located near Rockdale. The remainder of his life was spent in and around here and by his kindness and good deeds he had won many friends who will miss him greatly. He was married to Miss Ella Henry December 20, 1894 and to this happy union seven children were born, five of whom are still living, the other two having passed away while very young.
Mr. Hamilton will be remembered as one of our good farmers as well as officer and merchant, having lived on the farm the earlier part of his married life. In 1910 he was elected constable of Precinct 4 and served the people to the best of his ability for six consecutive years, being one of the best officers Rockdale ever had. For some time Mr. Hamilton and his son-in-law, Ewin E. Fergeson, had been in the market and grocery business. Mr. Hamilton was with his business early and late and had a smile and good word for everyone.
He was a man that had any amount of confidence in his fellow man. He was widely known and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. About nine years ago Mr. Hamilton gave his heart to Christ and united with the Baptist Church of which he was a member at the time of his death.
He leaves a wife, five children and two grandchildren, besides a number of close relatives to mourn his loss. The children are: Mrs. E.E. Fergeson, Mrs. Ross Davis, Laura, Ruth, and Harry Hamilton. The two little grandchildren are Ross Jr. and Ewin Jr. His sisters are: Mrs. J.C. Keys of San Angelo, Mrs. J.H. Austin of Valley View and his brothers, E.H. Hamilton of Buckholts, J.W. Hamilton of Abilene.
All his children were in attendance to his funeral except the brother in Abilene. The remains were laid to rest Friday afternoon in the New City Cemetery [i.e., Oaklawn]. Religious services were conducted at the grave by his pastor, Rev. G.S. Tumblin. The burial was under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias order, of which decedent had been a faithful member for many years, and the attendance of the Knights was indeed a striking tribute to the esteem in which they held their fellow brother, almost the full membership of the local lodge being present, and the beautiful ritual of the Order being impressingly rendered.
