I have to advise you from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim S. 2077, it appears that James Black was born October 4, 1758(9) at Pequea, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
While a resident of Paxton Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he enlisted and served as a private with the Pennsylvania Troops, as follows—
From July 12, 1776 in Captain Reed's Company, Colonel James Burd's Regiment of the "Flying Camp", he was in the battle of Flatbush, in August 1776, skirmishes at West Chester, East Chester and Mite Square, and about September 1, 1776 he was put under Colonel Hand, was in the battle of White Plains, and served six months; from June or July 1777, two months as substitute for his Father, Thomas Black, in Captain James Morrow's Company; from fall of 1777 to January 1778, two months in Captain John Killcreece's Company, Colonel Stewart's Regiment; from March or April 1778, two months in Captain James Morrow's Company; in August 1779, two or three weeks in Captain Campleton's Company of Rangers; in the fall of 1780 or 1781, two months in Captain William Allen's Company.
He was allowed pension on his application executed November 21, 1832, while resident of Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
There is no data relative to wife and children.
